What is the Mayo Clinic?
Mayo Clinic is a nonprofit worldwide leader in medical care, research and education for people from all walks of life. Physicians from every medical specialty work together to care for patients with a shared philosophy of "the needs of the patient come first."
More than 3,300 physicians, scientists and researchers and 46,000 allied health staff work at Mayo Clinic, which has sites in Rochester, Minn., Jacksonville, Fla., and Scottsdale/Phoenix, Ariz. Collectively, the three locations treat more than half a million people each year.
Dr. William Worrall Mayo
The US News and World Report of Best Hospitals has named Mayo Clinic at the top of their list for the last 20 years. Mayo accomplishes high medical quality, by coordinating the efforts of its entire group of doctors, and by devoting over 40% of its resources towards research (rather than just medical practice).
Dr. William Worrall Mayo, settled in Rochester, MN in 1863, and developed the Mayo Clinic from his pioneering medical practice. His dedication to medicine became a family tradition when his sons, Drs. William James Mayo and Charles Horace Mayo, joined his practice in 1883 and 1888, respectively. From the beginning, innovation was their standard and they shared a pioneering zeal for medicine.
Although the Mayo doctors were initially viewed as unconventional for practicing medicine through this teamwork approach, the benefits of a private group practice were undeniable. The Mayo Clinic became America's first integrated group practice, a model that is now standard in the United States.
